Careers and beers to encourage students

Engineers in the region have raised a glass to their chosen profession as part of a recruitment drive. The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East held their first “Careers and Beers” event of the new academic year at the Dickens Inn, Middlesbrough on Tuesday. The session was intended to be an informal way of letting new engineers find out more about civil engineering and the work of the ICE.

Members of the graduates and students (G&S) committee joined other students in the pub to discuss the opportunities available within the profession, and to help dispel misconceptions about careers in civil engineering.

Further Careers and Beers events will take place on Tuesday 13 November in the Old George Pub Newcastle and on Tuesday 20 November in the Big Jug, Durham.

Terry McDougall, chairman of the Tees Valley branch of ICE NE’s G&S, said: “Sometimes a hard sell can turn people off a career, but we think that meeting other students in relaxed surroundings and talking to them on a more informal basis will help open their minds to civil engineering and the possibilities it offers. “Hopefully the evenings will be a huge success and people will come to understand civil engineering better and appreciate it as the exciting and rewarding career option that it is.”
