North East revealed as National Lottery lucky hotspot

As the UK struggles to get back to work, The National Lottery gives people in the North East something to be cheerful about, as it reveals statistics about the nations and regions that struck lucky in 2007.

Since The National Lottery launched over 13 years ago, more than £560 million in top prizes has been paid out in the North East, which is also home to 116 lottery millionaires. In the North East region, there have been 292 top prizes won since the lottery began in 1994 totalling a staggering £565,896,629.

Three postcodes areas in the North East feature in this year’s list of the top 10 luckiest lottery hotspots. Newcastle-upon-Tyne (NE) ranks in fourth place overall in the league of postcodes with the most top prize-winning entries as a proportion of their adult player population, while Teesside (TS) and Sunderland (SR) both enter the top 10 for the first time, taking seventh and eighth place respectively.

It has been a lucky year all round for Geordies in particular as Newcastle continues to come in the top five for the highest number of top prize-winning entries and the biggest payout of larger prizes since launch, with a total prize payout of £263,848,307.90. Newcastle has the joint third highest number of millionaires in the country, along with Sheffield.

A National Lottery spokesperson said: “With three postcodes ranking in the top 10 luckiest postcode areas, the North East is clearly rich in luck with a staggering £565 million paid out in top prizes since the lottery started and an amazing 116 millionaires living in the region.Â
