Newcastle Science City takes a step closer

Plans to make Newcastle a world-beating destination for science took a step closer yesterday with the completion of the city’s biggest demolition project.

The former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery site has been cleared after 12 months of non-stop work to make way for the hub of a world-beating Science City development. The centrepiece of this is 100,000sq metres of new buildings, accommodating new world-class scientific research, teaching and business facilities.

Alan Clarke, Chief Executive of One NorthEast, which is partnering with Newcastle University and Newcastle City Council to drive forward Science City, said: “The clearance of the site is a milestone in this important scheme which will play a key role in the future development of Newcastle and the wider North East economy.”

Construction work of the new science quarter on the former home of Newcastle Brown Ale is expected to begin at the end of 2010.
