Tyne and Tees law firms merge

Two North East commercial law firms, Mincoffs from Tyneside and Jacksons from Teesside, are to merge in October 2008. The new firm ‘Mincoff Jacksons’ aims to stake a claim as one of the top five players in the North East legal market.

Mincoffs, based in Newcastle, was established in 1948 while Jacksons’ origins date back over 130 years. The new firm plans to make a “formidable” team able to advise both commercial and private clients across the North East.

Comprising of 21 partners and over 160 staff, Mincoff Jacksons will continue to operate from its current offices in Newcastle and Teesside. The new firm will be headed by the current senior partners of both practices, Howard Gold and Kevin Fletcher.

Howard Gold, senior partner at Mincoffs, said: “The merger will give businesses across the region the opportunity to benefit from the excellent skills and commercial understanding for which both firms are already well respected. In particular, clients are assured that advice comes from people who understand the region and its economy.”

Nigel Kidwell, managing partner of Jacksons, added: “Both firms have been watching the legal market and feel that now is the right time to join forces to provide clients with a first-class two-centre practice based in the North East. Our approaches are similar as we both give clients practical and straightforward advice in a way that suits their individual needs.”
