North East firm is the origin of software revolution

A North East software company is aiming to become one of the world’s frontrunners in ‘streaming applications’, having launched its own office software range available to rent via the web.

Newcastle-based Origin has been developing the solution to allow streaming for three years, and has launched with the first trial version of its own web portal www.softwaremonthly.com.

The firm is hoping to extend the range of streamed software to include multiple mainstream titles. The solution developed by Origin allows for any software to be streamed and metered for its usage on a pay per use basis.

Origin Office is the equivalent of Microsoft Office but is available to rent, streamed to the customer’s computer for £1 per month. Plans are already afoot to broaden softwaremonthly.com to stream games, movies and other software such as business accounts and graphics packages.

Dave Anderson of Origin said: “Quite simply nothing has been as big as this since downloads revolutionised the music industry and people stopped buying CDs. Streaming allows you to use the latest software as and when you need it, and just pay a minimum monthly rental for the technology to make it happen.

“The global software industry has been planning for this for some time, and we are ahead of the game. “We are already talking to other software vendors in relation to streaming their products such as games, business and entertainment applications.”
