Forensic data detective starts new business

An ex military policeman with a passion for analysing computer data has started his own business to help solve data related investigations.

Andrew Maddison from Widdrington in Northumberland started Orbital Forensics following a career at Northern Rock as the head of the technical security team.

“People think that once you press the delete key or format the hard disk on a computer that all record of a data transaction has been erased,” said Andrew. “The truth is that every computer leaves its own unique fingerprint which can later be retrieved using specialist forensic equipment. The same applies to mobile telephones.”

The data that Andrew retrieves can be used in a court of law or an employment tribunal provided that certain steps are taken and a strict data retrieval protocol is followed. Some of the typical cases Andrew has worked on involve the misuse of email and internet, identity fraud, and investigations into racism and bullying.

As well as forensic investigations, Andrew also offers services in computer audits, risk assessments, and physical security enhancements to IT systems.

“It’s a fascinating job which allows my police background and analytical nature to help my clients with their problems,” said Andrew. “Trusting an employee to use a piece of IT equipment in the right manner is one thing, but complete peace of mind is another and that is one of the things that Orbital Forensics can provide.”
