Fujitsu workers to stage strike action

Workers at computer giant Fujitsu are to stage a series of strikes in Newcastle in a long-running row over jobs, pay and pensions, it has been announced.

Unite said its members will walk out on five days in January, including today, following a one-day stoppage last month, the first ever national strike in the UK’s IT sector.

The union is protesting at proposals for 1,000 redundancies, an imposed pay freeze and plans by the company to close the main final salary pension scheme to new workers.

Unite national officer Peter Skyte said: “Whilst we remain ready and willing to talk at any time, Fujitsu remains a highly profitable company but has to date shown little willingness to seriously address the underlying issues of jobs, pay and pensions.

“Other IT companies are dealing with similar issues in a much more constructive way and the approach taken by Fujitsu to date treats its highly skilled workforce as a disposable commodity rather than its most important asset.”
