North East Businesses Going for Gold

OVER 3,000 North East businesses have now signed up to the official London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games online procurement service CompeteFor in a bid to secure a range of public and private sector contracts.

Thousands of North East companies in the region are now accessing CompeteFor.

The free service, launched in 2008, promotes a range of current contracts including London 2012, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and Cross Rail, matching potential buyers with potential suppliers.

To date, North East businesses have won over £50m worth of contracts to directly supply the Olympic Delivery Authority and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG,) with many more firms winning contracts in the supply chain.

Local companies which have been supplying London 2012 contractors through the supply chains include Sotech Ltd from Peterlee which is supplying gutters and roof cladding edges for the Aquatics Centre, and The Communicator Corporation based at Rainton Bridge Business Park in County Durham, which is providing LOCOG with enterprise email management solutions to help deliver digital communications.

Paul Taylor is Head of Business Engagement for Compete North East – a support service that helps businesses register on CompeteFor and provides practical hands on advice and proactive support in spotting opportunities and building relationships with potential partners.

He said: “We are delighted that so many businesses have seen the benefits of registering on CompeteFor and many of them are already winning contracts – and not just related to the London 2012 Olympics.

“There are still a huge amount of opportunities for large and small businesses within the supply chains and we have a great deal of knowledge, expertise and skills within the region.”
