Major development on Stanhope flood defences

WORK has started on a £25,000 project to repair a flood defence wall in County Durham.

The project near The Butts in Stanhope, is being funded by the Environment Agency as part of improvements to reduce the risk of flooding in the area.

Recent inspections reportedly revealed repairs were needed to a stone wall that acts as a flood defence.

At times of high flow on the River Wear water can seep underneath and through the wall, increasing the flood risk to nearby properties.

Environment Agency contractors will be re-pointing the wall to stop this seepage. They also will dig down along the water side of the wall to check the condition of it below ground level. This work is likely to take a number of weeks.

This work will help to reduce flood risk to 12 properties at The Butts and Stanhope Caravan Park.

Environment Agency project manager Simon Eadington said: “By re-pointing the wall it will continue to act as a flood defence for many years to come.

“By carrying out regular inspections on all our flood walls across the north east we can make sure that they are in a good condition and providing protection to local communities from flooding. “
