Nissan makes like a LEAF

A ELECTRIC vehicle to be built on Wearside has been shortlisted for the car of the year awards 2011.

The “LEAF” which is set to be built at Nissan’s Sunderland plant once production begins in 2013 is the first electric car to be short listed for the award.

Ian Shepherd, Nissan’s director of technology at the Nissan Technical Centre, in Cranfield, said:“Obviously, we are delighted the car has been shortlisted,” he said.

“It’s like nothing ever sold before – the world’s first mass production allelectric car – and this accolade rewards all the hard work that’s gone into making it a reality.”

The Leaf goes on sale in the UK in the spring and will cost £23,990, including a Government plug-in car grant of £5,000. The winner will be announced on Monday 29th of November.
