College awards SURGO £3m refurbishment contract
A NORTH EAST construction firm - which boasts an annual turnover of £50m - has landed a £3m contract to refurbish South Tyneside College.
The college has appointed Newcastle based SURGO as the main contractor for the project, which will see a complete overhaul of many of the institution’s facilities.
Lindsey Whiterod, Principal and Chief Executive at South Tyneside College, said: “We are very pleased to announce SURGO as our main contractor for this fantastic refurbishment project.
“They are a locally based contractor, which will help sustain employment in the area during these difficult economic times.”
In September this year, South Tyneside College was advised that it had been successful in its bid to secure a £1million enhanced renewal grant offered by the Skills Funding Agency to refurbish areas of the College.
The College will also contribute a further £2m to the project.
The grant will allow the College to progress with various refurbishment works such as a new refectory, training restaurant, hair and beauty salons and more student leisure areas.
There are also plans to refurbish the Learning Resource Centre and the bathroom facilities in Dr Winterbottom Hall.
The proposals also include expansion of the Autistic Spectrum Disorder Unit for learners with learning difficulties and disabilities.
