Stockton Library undergoes £1.9m transformation

Stockton Council’s Central Library is to undergo a £1.9m facelift.

The transformation will see investment in a new self-service technology, an enhanced reference and study facility, a local family library suite, improved ICT facilities, a new conference room and a new cafe.

The library will close on Thursday 24 February so the refurbishment can start and the new-look library will be ready to open in the autumn.

Councillor Mary Womphrey, said: “In the last year we have seen the number of library users across Stockton Borough increase by 15 per cent and more books are being borrowed.

“This new facility will be a real asset to the town and will promote library use even more.

“It is wonderful to have this opportunity to redesign and develop our library services for the twenty-first century.”

The redevelopment will also bring together the Customer Services Contact Centre and Cashiers Service all under one roof - offering people a one-stop-shop for information, services and the state-of-the-art library.

While the work takes place the Open Technology Centre will offer a condensed service at the Green Dragon Studios and a temporary “Express Library” will open in Wellington Square.
