Major revamp of historic markets gets under way

Work on a major £1m overhaul of Middlesbrough’s historic North Ormesby Market Square gets under way this week.

The complete refurbishment which starts today follows months of planning and extensive consultation with market traders and local residents.

The scheme will transform the square – which is home to the Grade 2 listed Trinity Church - into an attractive urban space.

Councillor Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “North Ormesby is an important and historic part of Middlesbrough and is home to a vibrant commercial and residential community.

“The Market is a key part of that mix and I’m delighted that this work is getting under way.

The council say the works will complement recent nearby developments, further developing the Square as an attractive public space on both market and non-market days.

Measures will be put in place to manage traffic circulation, with improvements to parking and the layout of the market.

There will be new lighting and the area will be further enhanced with the addition of tree planting.

Mr Rooney added: “The scheme will revitalise the Market and the surrounding area, and we will continue to work closely with market traders and local residents to ensure the area continues to thrive.”
