Pothole spend not enough, say road repair firms

ROAD repair firms in the region yesterday warned that the Transport Secretary’s pledge of another £100m to repair potholes up and down the country would fall significantly short.

The Secretary Philip Hammond announced the £100m plan yesterday saying all authorities would have to apply to be considered for a share.

But the Civil Engineering Contractors Association North East believes the previous payout was oversubscribed and new measures simply don’t go far enough.

Douglas Kell, director of CECA (NE), said: “While the news is excellent, there is a gap in the figure almost as big as the potholes themselves.

“The £100m equates to less than £100,000 for each local authority, in fact. That’s only enough to patch some of the holes and insufficient to undertake a full lasting repair.”
