North East exports on the up

The latest figures show a 21% surge in the value of North East exports during the last quarter of 2010, placing the region well ahead of the national average of 14%.

In Q4 2010, the value of North East exports was £3,339m, which was up 10% up on Q3 2010 and 21% up on the corresponding figure for Q4 2009.

Jonathan Walker, policy advisor at the North East Chamber of Commerce, said: “These are really strong figures for the region, and they qualify NECC’s belief that there are significant opportunities for North East businesses overseas that we must tap into if we are to see real economic growth here.

“The fact remains that our businesses need support to reach overseas markets. We have heard repeatedly that the Government wants to support the country to rebalance its economy, but now is the time for action.

“We need to see policy changes that will support existing exporters to break into new foreign markets, as well as assisting non-exporters to access channels overseas.”
