Buoyant future for marine firm

A Newcastle-based marine insurance association - which employs 210 people in the region and abroad - has expanded its headquarters to cope with a hike in demand for its services.

The North of England Protecting and Indemnity Association has successfully completed a major expansion and refurbishment of its 17-year-old head office on Newcastle’s Quayside.

It is hoped the increase in capacity will allow the company to increase its market share and insure over 12.5% of the world’s shipping tonnage.

Joint managing director Paul Jennings, said: ’We have steadily expanded since we acquired the building in 1994 and now have 183 people working in the head office and another 27 internationally.

“Our extended office is considerably larger and with additional appointments taking place, it allows us to continue providing a first-class service to our shipowners for the foreseeable future.”

North celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2010 and its history is linked with the traditions of Newcastle upon Tyne as a major shipping centre.

The firm also has regional offices in the major shipping hubs of Hong Kong, Piraeus and Singapore.
