Businesses optimistic of growth
The region’s businesses remain positive about growth but are looking to the government to create an environment to drive future expansion, according to a survey carried out by YouGov on behalf of KPMG.
72 % of organisations say the opportunity for growth exists for their business despite austerity measures, but businesses indicated that the government could be doing more to encourage prosperity.
Furthermore, 60% were concerned about the impact of the Budget upon their company and 52% of businesses stated that overly complex rules and regulations were the greatest obstacle to growth.
Mick Thompson, KPMG’s Newcastle office senior partner, said: “There has been recent good news for the region with, amongst other announcements, Greggs posting strong results and SSI investing in Teesside Cast Products.
“However, there is a general consensus that the government could be doing more to encourage growth. As we move towards Budget Day eyes will be on the Chancellor’s plans to put growth at the heart of the government’s agenda.”
