Washington firm wins contract to manufacture new pier gates
A Washington company has been awarded the contract to manufacture Sunderland’s new £75,000 project pier gates.
Architectural Metalworkers won the contract for new gates to frame the entrance to Sunderland’s Roker Pier after being selected from a shortlist of three tenders.
The project funded by Sunderland City Council, is expected to get under way later this year.
Sunderland Council Leader, Councillor Paul Watson said: “I’m delighted that a local company has won the contract for this work.
“The City Council is working hard to support local businesses through these difficult economic times and the Buy Sunderland First scheme was set up to ensure more Sunderland companies are given the opportunity to bid for council work.”
The pier and lighthouse are a Grade II listed structure. The pier took 18 years to build and opened in 1903.
Sunderland was awarded £1m from the Commission for the Built Environment (CABE) to revamp the area and was boosted by £500,000 of extra funding from the city council.
