Metro line set to reopen on Monday

Metro firm Nexus is on target to reopen the line between Byker and Tynemouth on Monday morning, it said yesterday.

The Metro line has been closed since March 12 while Nexus carries out a 23-day programme of modernisation works costing £22m, including track replacement and station upgrades.

The services are set to resume between Byker and Tynemouth from the start of timetabled services just before 6am on Monday.

Director of rail and infrastructure for Nexus, Ken Mackay said: “I’m pleased to say we are on track to have Metro services back up and running between Byker and Tynemouth on Monday morning.

“We have done an enormous amount of modernisation work during the line closure. We have replaced six kilometres of track and begun a programme of station upgrades to improve the passenger environment.

Nexus is carrying out the comprehensive modernisation of the line between Byker and Tynemouth as part of the £385m Metro all change programme.

It is the largest renewal project on the Tyne and Wear Metro network since it was constructed in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

A second Major Line Closure of 23 days will be needed in the next 12 months to continue the works between Byker and Tynemouth.
