Tyneside contracts leave the region

The business community in South Tyneside has reacted angrily to the news that a £1m contract will be handed to a firm outside of the region.

The move by South Tyneside Homes (STH) has reportedly angered business leaders, who say the new deal handed to a Warwickshire firm will have a big impact on employment in the area.

Geoff Ford, Chairman of South Tyneside-based Ford Aerospace and Ford Component Manufacturing, said the work lost to local contractors is worth more than £1m.

STH oversees the multi-million pound Decent Homes programme, which sees local firms supplying materials for a massive housing improvement scheme.

A council spokesman confirmed over the weekend that Wolseley UK, based in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, has been given the work.
