Developer unveiled for North Tyneside regeneration scheme
The developer for a multi million-pound seafront regeneration scheme in North Tyneside has been unveiled.
North Tyneside Council said the move sealed plans for Whitley Bay’s Spanish City site, which include a new hotel, care home and apartments.
Gateshead-based Robertson North East will carry out work on the 7.5 acre (3 hectare) site, which also includes the former Empress Ballroom.
The £20m project will go before North Tyneside Council planners soon.
A council spokeswoman said: “The redevelopment of the Spanish City site is something that this council has been working to deliver for more than 10 years.
“A tremendous amount of work has been invested over those years to ensure both the iconic Grade II listed dome was rescued for future generations, and that the wider site is developed as an asset for residents, visitors and the borough’s economy.
“We will now work with the preferred bidder to ensure that this can be delivered and we will provide an opportunity for the public to find out more about the details of the scheme in the near future.”
