Middleton Hall expansion plans could pave way for employment

A County Durham retirement village is seeking planning permission for an £8m expansion that will create 45 new jobs for the area.

Middleton Hall Retirement Village says it is looking to expand its accommodation and facilities on its site between Yarm and Darlington.

It will include 35 new independent living bungalows, a new café bar and shop as well as a dementia centre to care for 28 residents.

Jeremy Walford , managing director at Middleton Hall Retirement Village, said: “Approval of the plans will propel Middleton Hall to the forefront of retirement villages in the UK.”

The privately-owned company was founded in 1900. Work to transform it from a nursing home to the North’s first full retirement complex began 100 years later.

The five-year project is expected to meet the government’s stated aims announced in the budget of encouraging sustainable development and creation of 45 jobs .
