Egger boosts global credentials
Hexham-based chipboard manufacturer Egger UK has landed an international award for work to reduce the environmental impact of its activities.
The company’s ISO 14001 certification follows a £16m investment in advanced wood-recycling machinery, a new biomass boiler – powered by manufacturing residues – that lowers its consumption of fossil fuels and Europe’s most advanced emissions-control equipment.
Dr Keith Jones, lead auditor at BM TRADA Certification Ltd said: “I congratulate Egger on achieving accreditation to ISO 14001. Throughout my dealings with the company I have found them to be thoroughly committed to minimising the impact their activities have on the environment.”
The internationally-recognised standard provides a framework for organisations to control, maintain and improve environmental performance via a sophisticated Environmental Management System (EMS).
Matthias Veile, production & technical director at Egger, added: “This accreditation confirms the company’s commitment to reducing its impact on the environment and enables our ongoing programme of planned, continual improvements which address the environmental issues that matter to us all.
“Investing so heavily in recycling is not only environmentally-friendly but also helps to safeguard our supply of raw materials which is under threat thanks to controversial Government subsidies that encourage electricity generators to burn the UK’s precious virgin wood supplies in biomass power stations.”
