Hewlett Packard set to create 170 jobs on Tyneside

PC and printer maker Hewlett Packard is reportedly creating 170 jobs with a new call centre on Tyneside.

The company said it had chosen Gateshead because of the area’s skills base and because callers responded positively to a North East accent.

Staff at the new centre will handle a range of customer service and technical support calls.

Managing director Nick Wilson said there were no plans to increase staffing beyond the initial 170 posts.

Mr Wilson added: “There’s a lot of truth in claims customers respond well to a North East accent.

“But the main reason we have come to Gateshead is to access skills and work ethic that exists in the area.”
