68 jobs to go at pipe making factory

A pipe making factory in County Durham is to close with the loss of 68 jobs reports claim.

Radius Systems, which is based on the Newton Aycliffe Industrial Estate, makes pipes and fittings for the gas, water and telecommunication industries.

The company said it planned to move production to two factories in Derbyshire and Northern Ireland by the end of the year, to reduce costs.

Chief executive Stuart Godfrey said staff affected would be offered transfers to remaining plants.

Mr Godfrey said: “The decisions were not taken lightly, and only after very careful analysis of the current and future needs of the business.

“Whilst it is deeply regrettable that a restructuring of the business results in job losses, these changes are necessary to maintain our competitiveness.”

The Newton Aycliffe site opened in 1963.
