First stage of £100m Regeneration Scheme complete

The first phase of an exciting £100m regeneration programme in Newcastle city centre has finally been completed.

Downing property group’s construction arm, George Downing construction is currently developing the former Scottish and Newcastle Brewery site into offices, teaching spaces and student accommodation.

Newcastle University Business School are some of the newest residents of the flagship project Downing Plaza.

Ian Clarke, Director of Newcastle University Business School commented:

“Our new building is one of Newcastle’s newest, and most architecturally innovative, developments.”

“From the inside and out, it represents the huge strides we are taking as a progressive, international business school, committed to providing the best possible experience for our students.”

Joanne Ormerod at Ian Simpson Architects worked closely with the Downing property group on the project. She said:

“Its strength of form, robust materials and crisp detailing contribute significantly to both the local context and the city’s skyline.”

The second phase of the project is nearing completion, and comprises a 520-bedroom student village and 8,000 sq ft of retail space.

Further student accommodation facilities are due to be built this year, and planning permission for a 285- bedroom hotel also has planning permission.
