Hartlepool named as potential site for next generation of nuclear power

Hartlepool has been named as one of the suitable suites for a next generation power plant.

While it is unclear whether this means that a new plant will be constructed, it does present opportunities for local businesses to get involved in the supply chain to decommission the plant and build a new plant.

This also comes as good news for the significant numbers of people who are employed by the plant.

James Ramsbotham, chief executive of the North East Chamber of Commerce, said: “Hartlepool power station is a sizeable force in the north East economy so its heartening to see the government listing it as one of eight sites designated for a new nuclear plant.”

In recent weeks members of all political parties have shown support for new nuclear power stations, and EDF Energy are eagerly anticipating the publication of a White Paper on Energy Market Reform before the summer recess.

In response to the publication of the National Policy Statements for Energy, EDF Energy said: “This is a key step in the planning process for all types of energy infra structure.

“These steps are important as we and our partner Centrica progress plans for new builds

“In turn that will drive growth in jobs, rejuvenate the UK supply chain and help drive economic recovery.”
