Blyth superstore gets the go-ahead

Blyth is set to receive a boost after the development of new multi-million pound supermarket complex was approved.

Planning permission for the new Morrisons site was secured in November 2010, but it is only now that the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government has confirmed that a compulsory purchase order will allow Northumberland County Council to complete the assembly of land for the scheme.

This will come as good news to many of the current employees, as 160 jobs are set to be secured, with the potential to create another 140 more.

The new store will incorporate a number of sustainable design features, including a wind turbine and improvements to the adjacent land.

It is hoped that the new development will encourage of the regeneration of Blyth town centre, attracting more shoppers and more potential future investors.

Regeneration manager at Northumberland County Council Ray Browning said: “The scheme will now complement other regeneration schemes in the town centre, including the Townscape Heritage Initiative and act to boost private sector confidence and encourage further investment in the town.”
