New Electric Car Charge points to be added

Electric vehicle technology is spreading quickly across the North East as Teesdale and Scotch Corner have been named as two potential new sites for electric vehicle charging points.

One North East’s Charge your Car Team has identified a gap in the charging post network and is urging businesses or local authorities to come forward with suggestions for suitable locations to provide a southernmost link to the North East network.

It is hoped that this scheme will establish the areas as the home of Europe’s most advanced electric-vehicle charging network, adding to the 55 charging points which have already been installed in the North East by npower.

Businesses have been asked to get involved with the project by housing the electric vehicle chargers to reassure drivers using electric vehicles in and around the North East that journeys beyond a full battery charge are possible

This comes as a further boost to the region, which is already a world centre for the development and manufacture of electric vehicles. 100% grants are available to organisations interested in getting involved.

Josey Wardle, North East Plugged in Places Manager said: “We hope as well as the significant environmental incentives, that there will be a business incentive for partners getting involved – helping them to develop new customers and also in future providing them with a valuable asset.”

The North East is already a world centre for the development of electric vehicles, and investment in the new power points will help the region reinforce its position as a manufacturer of alternative technology transport

Roy Stanley, non-executive director of the Tanfield Group, which specialises in electric vehicles, said:

“The manufacture of electric vehicles in the region is the dawning of a new industry.

“It has the potential for attracting a high level of investment into the region and the creation of many high calibre jobs.”
