Future is digital for local economy

Digital connections must be improved to support private sector growth, according to the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC).

In a letter distributed to local authorities, the NECC has stressed their belief that the availability of high-speed broadband is now as important as roads, airports and railways were during the 20th century, and if the region is to realise its potential, improvements must be made.

Research by e-Skills has shown that technology use could increase the North East GVA by 3.8% over the next 5 years, yet 25% of businesses in the region currently do not use the Internet

Mark Stephenson, policy adviser at NECC said: “Digital connectivity is a real issue for many North East businesses and we now need to see the swift implementation of policy at a local level to address this.”

The Chamber has laid out a development plan to help local businesses ensure they are equipped to deal with the changes.

They are now encouraging local authorities to work in partnership with the private sector when investing in digital hubs. The role of the two LEP’s in establishing the regions’ connectivity is also being considered.

He added: “For businesses in these areas, access to high speed internet service will provide a much needed boost, giving them a fighting chance of capitalising on opportunities and the growing North East economy.

“Businesses of all types rely on digital infrastructure, and we must ensure that we have the right level of investment in this to allow our businesses to develop and grow.”
