Jobs saved at Engineering firm

Express Engineering has saved 40 engineering jobs in Wallsend after the acquisition of a struggling engineering firm.

Northern Precision Engineering went into administrative receivership last week, but fortunately Express was able to step in to purchase the firm for an undisclosed sum.

Northern Precision has recently completed a £4.5 million capital investment in a plant extension and new equipment. It is now hoped that the new acquisition will help Northern Precision fulfil their obligations to customers.

Nigel Davison, Managing Director of Express Engineering said: “After a challenging couple of years, business has really taken off again and we have a strong, healthy order book.

“Northern Precision operated in a very similar field and so when we heard it had gone into administrative receivership, we saw a great opportunity to increase our capacity and take on good people with the right skills.

While 33 shop floor positions have been offered to staff from Northern Precision, only seven of the 12 management and administrative staff will keep their jobs.

John Myhill, Operations Director with Northern said: “This is the best thing that could have happened for us because the business had been struggling for some time and people were uncertain about their futures.

“Not only does it save jobs but it creates stability and opportunity.”
