Newcastle architect wins prestigious accolade
A local architect has been awarded the accolade of “Specialist Conservation Architect” after the completion of several award winning building projects.
Jenny Gillatt, Director and co founder of Mosedale Gillatt is one of the first people in the country to receive the accreditation, which came after the firm completed work on new buildings on Ouseburn Parks, including Millfield House in Jesmond Dene
Jenny said: “’To be accredited as a Specialist Conservation Architect - the highest possible grading for conservation from the RIBA – is a great achievement and complements the ongoing work of the practice.
“At times all existing buildings needs to change and adapt – and we have successfully shown how you can do this in a way that doesn’t ruin the existing building.”
RIBA examined the submission, which included a rigorous submission procedure including case studies of projects, which have been undertaken over the past decade.
RIBA President Ruth Reed said: “Conservation architecture has a highly significant part to play within the profession, and the RIBA is firmly committed to strengthening the profession’s credibility and standing in the field.
“The new Conservation Register will facilitate the process for those commissioning works on heritage buildings, clients who require architects with the appropriate level of knowledge, competence and experience for their individual project.”
It is now hoped that this register will create opportunities for architects at all levels to undertake specialist conservation work, as well as helping other architects obtain the necessary skills and expertise.
