£3m care home plans approved

A care company based in the region has had its plans for a £3million care home in Whitby approved unanimously by Scarborough Borough Council.

It is hoped that the 47 room facility will exceed industry standards, with larger than average private rooms, all with ensuite facilities.

The luxury home is also set to include a beauty salon, cinema, resident’s cafe and activity room.

Henson Healthcare, the owners of the home, project that the site will create around 40 full and part time jobs, with building work expected to start in September this year.

Iain Murphy of Newcastle-based architects Alston Murphy Associates, said: “We want to create a care home that is at the heart of the community and has the support of local residents and townspeople.”

“When drawing out the plans we listened to the views of residents who provided us with very valuable local knowledge and changed the outline proposals to better reflect their wishes.”

Operations director of Henson Healthcare Valerie Norton will be the Care Quality registered ‘fit person’ responsible for the home. She said: “This will be a far cry from the outdates view of care homes, and be of great benefit to the people of Whitby.

“We expect a big demand, particularly from local people who do not want to be forced to move outside the town to find first rate care in their later years.”
