£1m investment in social housing

A housing provider has pledged to invest £1million to help social housing tenants in Newcastle improve their properties.

Leazes Homes have now taken over management of the 91 properties in Bulcher Village from the previous provider, and will now make modifications to the homes, which will benefit over 200 residents.

The tenants of the homes in Bulcher Village voted to transfer the management of their properties to Leazes Homes after the company offered various assurances to the tenants, including a promise to bring the properties up to Modern Homes Standards.

Bill Midgley, chair of Leazes Homes said: “Tenants were consulted about the takeover and their resounding feedback was that they supported Leazes’ bid.

“Leazes has a growing reputation of providing high quality, affordable accommodation to people in need and I think the tenants at Blucher Village clearly recognize the positive impact that we will have on their homes and their community.

Leazes Homes will now survey the homes over the month of September to see what work needs to be done. Improvements will begin in 2012.

Brian O’Doherty, head of Housing Development and Partnership Management at Newcastle City Council, said: “The provision of affordable housing that meets modern standards is a priority for the City Council and I am delighted that Leazes Homes will be able to provide improvements to the homes which will make a real difference to the lives of residents in the village”.
