Queens Award success for Washington business

A battery manufacturer in Washington has been presented with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for their development of innovative technologies.

Rayovac were presented with the award to honour the work they have done to improve hearing aid batteries by the Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Nigel Sherlock OBE, at its factory on Stephenson Industrial Estate.

Over the past few years, Rayovac have been working towards developing green battery technology. The batteries, which are free of mercury, have been developed as part of a £3 million investment at Washington.

Vince Armitage, divisional vice president at Rayovac explains: “The award is such a prestigious one and a great tribute to the hard work and innovation that’s gone into developing the new batteries.

“We have a long track record in being at the forefront of hearing aid battery development with new battery sizes, pack variants and customer support programmes. It’s a tradition were proud to continue.”

The company already exports its products to more than 70 countries in Europe, but is now hoping for further success on the back of its Queen’s Award success.

The cleaner materials they are now using are better for the environment, whilst also increasing the voltage in hearing aids.

He added: “We’re in a strong position to meet this demand as it emerges and the Queen’s Award underlines our success.”
