New marine technologies for Northumberland

A Northumberland Business and Science centre has invested in the latest marine technologies to help improve its global appeal in the marine science sector.

Astec Business & Science Centre in Lyne Sands can now provide its tenants with a constant supply for near tropical temperature sea water. This will allow marine science businesses and researchers to cultivate a diverse range of aquatic plants and animals all year round, and should eliminate the logistical difficulties and costs associated with suing tropical seawater.

The sea water is initially warmed by a neighbouring power station, which Astec then filters and treats, before it is pumped into the facility’s specialist wet labs. To explain how the process works, Astec have also produced a CGI animated tour to explain in simple terms how the facility works, as well as the Centre’s full range of facilities and plans for future expansion.

Emma Wilson, sales & marketing manager at Astec commented: “Ideally we like to show people round the Centre and let them see first-hand the fantastic facilities we have here.

“When that’s not possible, when we’re talking to aquaculture professionals from other parts of the UK or overseas for example, our CGI tour allows us to showcase the Centre and communicate visually a process which would be difficult to explain by conventional means.”
