North East announced as new Low Carbon Enterprise Zone

A new Low Carbon Enterprise Zone for the North East has been given the green light by the government this morning, and is expected to create over 7000 new jobs by 2022.

This announcement confirms the North East’s place as a major player in the renewable technologies market, and will deliver real benefit for the whole region. Chairman of the North East LEP Paul Wooslton now hopes to establish the North East as a world leader in low carbon research and development

The strategy will transform the North East economy by growing the private sector, expanding key sectors, creating a skilled workforce and renewing many areas of the region.

Paul Woolston commented: “The LEP Board understands the importance of investors working closely with the private sector and the public sector in the region, and with Government, in order to create the conditions for the long-term sustainable growth and prosperity of our economy.

“We are delighted that the Government has provided additional support in the form of Enhanced Capital Allowances for the Zone along the bank of the Tyne. This will kick-start our ambitions for high-end renewables in the area.”

He also praised the collaborative approach his colleagues took to the development of the proposal, which “sets the right tone for how the LEP will work together and with partners in the future.”
