Nick Hutchinson of Parker Dominic Hunter talks the ins and outs of the pharmaceutical industry with bdaily

In the his position as manager for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries at Parker dominick hunter, Nick Hutchinson previous experience puts him at a distinct advantage.

“When I was studying for my Doctorate in Biochemical Engineering, I conducted research into manufacturing processes for pharmaceutical products,” Nick explains.

“This knowledge has been a great help when dealing with clients, as it has given me the insight to see what they need and what’s important to them.”

Parker dominick hunter is part of Parker Hannifin, a global manufacturer of motion and control technologies and systems. The division which is based in the North East is one of over 100 Parker divisions globally, and specialises in providing filtration solutions to the process industries.

Due to his technological background, Nick is well placed to promote the products his division produces, both at home and abroad.

“I develop strategies to improve sales as well as ideas for new products and product management in developing geographical markets such as China,” Nick says

“We’ve recently brought in a new filtration product which incorporates single use technology which is advantageous for the customer as it prevents cross contamination, and we are now looking to increase our sales presence through this product.

“Our products are already sold in over 50 countries, and a big proportion of our sales are in emerging markets outside of the UK.”

Due to the nature of the products Parker dominick hunter produces, the company was not drastically affected by the recession, although the company did face some new challenges.

“The pharmaceutical industry isn’t as cyclical as other industries, and the demand for our products is always there even when economic growth is slow,” explains Nick. “However, during this period companies often look for ways they can make savings, such as investing less in research and development, or creating economies of scale through industry consolidation.

“While this sometimes results in delays in projects, if you are patient you will continue to be successful.”
