Nevil Tynemouth from New Results Training on ‘how to select the right training for me or my business’
Training is a fantastic way of investing in your business and most organisations recognise the importance of maximising that investment.
If you are considering any sort of training for you or your team then there are some fundamental areas you need to consider.
1) What must the training achieve, and what do you want to happen after the training and can you define what success will be?
2) If there are multiple areas identified as training needs – prioritise – what will have maximum impact on the business
3) Who is involved – who are the key stakeholders in this process and get their input
4) What return on investment are you looking at, and what is the planned initial investment
5) Do we want training on site or do we want to attend an open course a training provider is running already?
6) What is the timetable to doing this, this week, this month, this year?
7) How will this training be implemented or cemented after delivery – how will you or your team maintain the momentum after the course has been delivered?
Can you then draw up a shortlist of potential providers? Can anyone you know recommend or refer a provider? Have you worked with a provider previously?
With that shortlist, decide how much you need to consider the following: their history, customer testimonials, proposal and pricing – look at the overall value and how it matches your requirements. Do any of the providers suggest anything that is outside of your original scoping but that would be useful and relevant. Don’t be afraid to aim high when looking for a training organisation, some of the best providers and best known names can provide the best value for you and your organisation.
Don’t forget some of the other indirect benefits that training can provide your business.
- Improved staff morale
- Customer satisfaction increase
- Joined up thinking and working across teams
- Improved communication across teams
Training is a great investment and one that shouldn’t just be considered when the business is growing, in difficult times it is often training that can make your business stand out from the crowd and gain an advantage over your competitors.
