Newcastle College launched one of a kind design course

Newcastle College is launching an innovative new course designing phone applications – believed to be the first of its kind for a UK higher education institution.

The FdSc in Software Applications Development will teach students the skills required to build mobile apps for Android and iPhone, as well as for the tablet market.

Graduates of the course will be able to create their own apps in a market, which will reach almost 48 billion by 2015.

When developing the Foundation Degree course, the College worked closely with industry experts, including Perfect Image, Codeworks and Ayo Media.

Jim Hubbard, Director of the School of Applied Science and Technology, said: “The idea to launch a Foundation Degree in mobile applications was conceived a couple of years ago when we first started to see the massive potential for growth in this area.

“We believe that this course is unique and takes many of the courses currently offered for the android platform, to the next level.”

The College also plans to begin a range of short beginner level courses for those with an interest in mobile apps, to others who want to work in advanced software.

The college has also invested in a host of state of the art software, including Apple Macs, smartphones, iPads and Adobe Creative Suite.
