Northern designers showcased at design event
The biggest design exhibition in the North East took place at the Baltic this weekend, showcasing some of the region’s best design talent.
Design Event was spread across four different exhibitions at the internationally recognised gallery in Gateshead, and gave art lovers the opportnuity to see a variety of innovative and unique designs.
A main showcase event called MART, attendees were also given the opportunity to purchase works by top designers including the likes of Noma Bar, who fascinated audiences with a striking print machine in the shape of a giant black dog.
Kala Preston, Design Event acting director, said: “We are thrilled with the success of this year’s festival, the sheer volume of public support we have seen at all of this year’s events so far has been overwhelming.
“It just goes to show how important design and culture is to our region, and how proud we are of the home-grown talent we have right here.”
Other curiosities at MART included a gravity defying melted-look fish bowl, giant chain jewellery, a book shelf in the style of a tree branch and Byker inspired mugs.
Design Event is now a biennial fixture, and in the years the festival will not take place, organisers will take a group of Northern designers to exhibit at 100% Design, part of the London Design Festival.
