Energy provider plugs in fleet of electric cars
Sunderland energy provider EDF will be traveling green as they have taken delivery of three exclusive electric BMW Minis.
The cars will be based at the firm’s Doxford International Business Park in Sunderland, and employees will be able to get around the region using the hundreds of electric vehicle charging points available.
Each car is branded to reflect EDF and London 2012’s sustainability partnership. which aims to promote low carbon travel.
Four charging posts have already been installed at the company’s office, and a single charge will allow the Mini to travel between 80 to 110 miles.
The company are hoping the attention generated by the iconic MINI E fleet will help to bolster the electric vehicles market in the UK.
Gareth Wynn, directo of EDF’s 2012 Programme, said: “Electric cars are already a lower carbon choice, but as we progress with decarbonising electricity production in the UK over the coming years the environmental case will get stronger and stronger.
“The MINI E shows that electric cars can appeal to people who like to drive and who enjoy cars.
“They also show that low carbon electric transport is a realistic prospect for the future that can contribute to UK carbon reduction targets.”
As forecasts suggest there will be 660,000 plug-in vehicles in the UK BY 2020, Gareth went on to say that he hoped the EDF campaign would prompt people in the North East to think about how they can reduce the carbon footprint of their travel.
