Tharsus invests in more apprentices

Another local engineering firm is investing in more apprentices to support the region’s flourishing manufacturing industry after seeing the positive effects it had on their busiesss.

Tharsus decided to increase numbers of apprentices after one of their engineers was named as TDR’s BTEC Engineering Student of the Year in the Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering category.

Now the company plans to open up their apprenticeship scheme to eight more youngsters under a two year technician programme, adding to the three others the company has already committed to.

Tharsus chief executive Brian Palmer said: “There is a widening engineering youth skills gap in the region and wanted to help to improve this situation.

“Recent Government investment in a new Technology and Innovation Centre means the manufacturing sector has the backing and potential to lead on economic recovery, however we need to attract and cultivate emerging talent in the industry to make it happen.

Tharsus manufacturing manager Phil Hunter, said: “Tharsus has always been a keen supporter of training and development at all levels and we want to continue to build on the contribution of young people like Ryan as our business grows.

“We run work experience for younger students still at school as we are trying to show the youth of today what an exciting and gratifying career can be had in manufacturing.

“I am also a firm believer in gaining work experience from a young age; it helps you to understand what you want to do with your future as well as standing you in better stead of achieving your goals.”
