Port of Tyne wins international award

The Port of Tyne has been named as the UKs Best Port of Call by some of the world’s leading cruise expert.

After an extensive vetting process, the port was chosen over a number of others due to its excellent commitment to customer services, and the world class amenities close by.

Explaining why the Port of Tyne was selected as the best UK port for visitors, Cruise Critic’s Editor in Chief, Carolyn Spencer Brown said: “Newcastle stands right up against some of the UK’s marquee ports when it comes to an absolutely delightful city centre – including but not limited to the Quayside – and superb museums, restaurants and galleries.

“It’s convenient as both a port of embarkation and a port of call, lines like Fred. Olsen and Cruise & Maritime Voyages start and end cruises here while Holland America offers day visits, and Newcastle’s charms extend beyond the city to the countryside, with a range of attractions from castles to cathedrals and the gorgeous scenery of the Pennines.”

The Ports cruise business provides a positive economic impact in excess of £44m to the region and sustains about 1,400 jobs in the tourism sector.

Sarah Stewart, chief executive of destination management and marketing agency NewcastleGateshead Initiative expressed her delight at the news.

She added: “As a compact destination, cruise passengers are able to experience a huge amount even on a day trip.

The history, culture, sport and shopping on offer have helped establish NewcastleGateshead as one of the UK’s most exciting destinations and as an Olympic Host City next year

“With more calls planned for next year, we’re looking forward to working with the Port of Tyne to grow this valuable and flourishing part of NewcastleGateshead’s tourism economy.”
