ICE calls for more improvements to local infrastructure

TT2 is set to become fully operational today, after four years of construction and more than ten years of planning.

However, in the wake of the unveiling, the Institution of Civil Engineers has made fresh calls for vital junction works to be carried out surrounding the new and refurbished tunnels.

The tunnels will now offer two lanes for northbound traffic and two lanes for southbound traffic, but the regional director of ICE believes that for the new crossings to be fully effective, the junctions North and South of the crossings also need to be upgraded

Stephen Larkin commented: “It is fantastic that both tunnels are now open, but we still have concerns on capacity issues.

“While it seems that the recent smaller-scale upgrade at Silverlink is working, we wait to see what it’s like when both tunnels are open.

“Smaller upgrades have made a difference but we want to see larger upgrades brought forward.”
