The Spa at Rockliffe Hall
Normally the thought of working on a Saturday would make me shudder, but when I realised that it would involve a visit to the spa at Rockliffe Hall Hotel, the prospect suddenly seemed far more appealing.
Located just outside of Darlington, Rockliffe boasts a PGA golf course, a Michelin starred chef, and a world class spa, so I had high hopes for my visit. On arrival I was met by one of the spa butlers, who gave me a guided tour of the facilities. His courteous manners set me at ease immediately, and were indicative of the treatment I was set to receive for the rest of the day.
After a quick change and a short stop in the sauna, I headed upstairs to the spa area to meet Chloe, the beautician who would be conducting my Sacred Nature Spa treatment. After asking me about my skin type and explaining the treatment, the initially-annoying-but-oddly-soothing music came on and what can only be described as the ultimate pamper session began.
After a relaxing back massage, my face was cleansed, toned and moisturised with some soothing organic products, which Chloe assured me would help with my problem skin. Whilst waiting for my face mask to work, I was given a foot rub, which was surprisingly enjoyable (speaking as someone who detests having my feet touched!)
After my treatment, and whilst still in a trance-like state, I was led to the sleep treatment room to relax after my treatment. If it wasn’t for my growling stomach, I would have happily stayed wrapped up under the furry blanket for the rest of the afternoon!
For my lunch I shuffled over to the Brasserie in my robe and slippers, which was conveniently located adjacent to the spa. Healthy options were indicated on the menu for more calorie conscious diners, and after much deliberation I opted for sea bass with a melon salsa (one of the healthy ones).
The fish arrived promptly, and while it was perfectly presented, I think it’s healthy credentials were based on the portion size rather than its contents. However, when I requested something extra to accompany it, the waitress promptly bought me a salad to accompany it. The fish was well cooked and the subtle taste of the salsa complimented it beautifully.
For dessert I chose figs baked in honey, accompanied by cream and ‘crumble’. The tangy fruit contrasted sharply with the creaminess and the crunch of the candied nuts, and I savoured every mouthful. I concluded my meal with a black Americano, accompanied by a homemade shortbread.
For the remainder of the afternoon I tried out the hydrotherapy pool, solarium, tepidarium, and very briefly the caldarium (too cold for my liking!), before lazing by the pool with a non-alcoholic cocktail.
Eventually, I was forced to drag myself away at around 4pm, but not before receiving a warm farewell from several of the staff as I departed. I left Rockliffe feeling refreshed and revived– and I really must stress that the service I received added to the whole experience. The whole day made for an intensely indulgent treat, perfect for any girls’ Christmas stocking, and is one I will certainly be adding to my list this year!
