Keeping it Green at NCFE
As well his role as marketing projects leader at NCFE, Kevin Gill has another important role in the company - within the Green Team.
NCFE creates a number of diverse, nationally recognised qualifications, which contribute to the success of over 340,000 learners annually. This is perhaps why there has been such a positive uptake on green issues within the company.
“Maybe it’s the type of people who work here, but generally most of them really see and value the benefits of what we do,” says Kevin.
Along with 5 other members of staff, Kevin is in charge of getting staff involved with the different schemes they organise.
“We try to raise awareness of the importance of recycling in the workplace - as well as organising office initiatives, we also have added useful green tips to the daily Help desk email which goes out to every member of staff.” he continues. “This is a good way of getting people thinking about recycling and switching lights off without being too pushy.”
“For example, we recently were involved in Green Britain Bike week, and got employees at NCFE to cycle into work for a week, which was a success.”
As well as encouraging green initiatives, Kevin and the team also endeavour to raise money to support the environment.
“We’ve organised a bric-a-brac exchange, and a cake stall, and next year we are considering using the money we raise to plant trees to help offset some carbon usage.”
While bringing employees together is not a primary advantage of the scheme , it is evident that it does have a positive effect on employee morale.
“There is a real family feel within the company, and within the Green Team also and the initiative allows members to come forward and volunteer for various different sessions to come forward and develop their knowledge.
“Ultimately not wasting is a responsible thing to do in this day and age and we all ought to be thinking towards the future too.”
