North East MEP visits regional environmental leader

North East MEP Martin Callanan has visited a local manufacturer to learn more about environmental engineering innovations in the region.

GT Group specialises in engineering product design and manufacturing for the and off highway diesel engine manufacturers.

Mr Callanan was given a tour of the facility in Peterlee, which is currently developing a range of emissions and thermal control products for buses, tractors and construction equipment to dramatically reduce their environmental impact.

Martin Callanan, Conservative MEP for the North East England, who sits on the EU’s Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee, said: “I am very impressed with what I have seen at GT Group, which is clearly a world leader in its sector.

“GT’s investment in technology, cutting edge product innovation and advanced techniques bode well for it remaining at the forefront of the European and international environmental engineering industry.

GT Group currently exports to 60 countries worldwide, and has forged an international reputation for its work on engine emissions control systems.

Geoff Turnbull, GT Group chairman, said: “Mr Callanan and I had a very useful discussion on the possibilities and challenges facing the environmental engineering industry.

“With the EU and international governments imposing tough regulations on transport emissions, vehicle manufacturers around the world are sourcing new technologies to deliver improved vehicle performance and environmental sustainability.”

GT Group currently employs around 300 people, but is now working on an ambitious growth programme to increase its workforce to 500 in the next 3 years.
