O’Briens celebrate national recycling contract

A local recycling company is celebrating after landing a prestigious contract with property and construction giant Gentoo.

O’Brien Waste Recycling Solutions will process he waste produced by Gentoo in the area, significantly reducing the housing-group’s transport-related carbon emissions and boosting their green credentials.

Gentoo serves 70,000 customers and 29,000 homes in Wearside, and by recycling 90% of their waste, they and O’Brien’s will make great steps in reducing the region’s carbon footprint.

Alan Ballantine, group procurement manager at Gentoo said: “O’Brien successfully came through a robust and very competitive tendering process to secure this contract and the company provides an excellent fit for our group.

“It’s also great for the local economy that we have the skills, infrastructure and desire on our doorstep to protect our environment now and in the future and it supports our contribution to improving the art of living for our customers and staff.”

Gentoo have focused heavily on improving their carbon footprint, and have been included in the Sunday Times’ Best Green Companies list 3 years running, as well as achieving the ISO 14001 environmental management standard.

O’Brien have 3 recycling centres in Newcastle, Sunderland and Teesside and strive to recycle 98% of everything it collects, and hope to eventually send nothing to landfill.
