O’Briens celebrate Two Million MetroCentre Deal

A local waste management firm has created several new jobs after landing a £2 million deal helping the Metrocentre reduce its environmental impact.

O’Briens will now recycle 96% of waste produced by Europe’s largest shopping centre to help it become the greenest shopping centre in the UK in 2012.

To cope with demand, the firm has recruited 4 new members of staff to add to its 320 strong workforce, and has invested in 2 new vehicles to facilitate the contract.

Nathan O’Brien, director of waste management at the company, said: “This is an excellent contract to have been awarded and we are delighted that such a huge shopping centre has chosen to work together with the region’s leading waste recycling company to ensure maximum recycling.

“It’s great to see such a large organisation committed to improving its environmental impact.”

The Metrocentre currently recycles around 70% of its 4,500 tonnes of waste but this will vastly increase through the contract with O’Briens. Through the help of the recycling firm, the Metrocentre eventually hopes to recycle 100% of all waste.

Dave Dixon, environmental services manager at Metrocentre, said: “O’Brien has worked with Europa Facility Services at Metrocentre in the past to help us clear snow in winter, and it’s fantastic that we now have a long-term relationship that will see us become more environmentally friendly.

“The partnership between O’Brien and Metrocentre will help to reinforce all of our waste management practices that we have undertaken over recent year.”
